LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Gulf Shores residents Betty Lafferty and Ron Jones participated in the World Association of Bench and Dead Lifters (WABDL) powerlifting world championships in Las Vegas. More than 600 lifters from 11 countries took part from Nov. 13-18.

Lafferty opened the competition with two world records in the 105-pound Masters division in the bench-press and deadlift events. Her lifts surpassed the world records by 80 pounds in the bench and 55 pounds in the deadlift. She then won the open (All ages) division championship in the bench press. Lafferty (76) has been a competitive power lifter for almost two decades and has set 35 world records.

Jones competed in the Masters division and set two Alabama state records. The lifts were good for third place in the bench press and deadlift events. He has now attained 15 state records.
