1165th families receive Christmas cheer

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The 1165th Military Police Co., with its headquarters in Fairhope, is scheduled to return from its deployment to Afghanistan by year’s end.

The soldiers, who have been gone for almost a year, will return to a grateful public and their families who have been awaiting this day. More information will be coming about the return date and welcome home parade.

While the troops have been deployed, the Citizens for Local Troop Support have helped many of the families of the 1165th.

And those families are not forgotten here at the holidays. Each family with children will receive a $35 gift card to Wal-Mart for each child to help with some of the expenses of Christmas and to provide a small thank-you to each of the returning soldiers.

“The money for the gift cards was raised through the tireless efforts of a group of volunteers for the Citizens for Local Troop Support,” stated Joe Birindelli, the leader of Citizens for Local Troop Support and the 2011 Mobile Area Veteran of the Year. “Without the many volunteers and other groups that have supported us, this wouldn’t be possible.”

One such group is the South Baldwin Republican Women’s Club who has been helping to support a family of the 1165th who has fallen on hard times.

“With their support and the help of so many others, this family will hopefully get back on their feet, especially now that the soldier of the family is returning home,” said Birindelli.

The South Baldwin Republican’s Women’s Club has also supported many other families of the 1165th since their deployment by providing school clothes and shoes and school supplies for 33 families. They have also helped with payment of electric bills and even bought tires for one family.

Becky Vasko, the vice president of the group, said, “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to serve these families of our brave men and women overseas.”

You can help support the families of the 1165th as well by donating to the Citizens for Local Troop Support. To do that you can contact Joe Birindelli at 251-928-3292.
