FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Fairhope Yacht Club hosted its annual Single-Handed Regatta on Saturday, Nov. 3.

While most regattas allow other crew members on board, the Single-Handed allows only one person per boat; 14 skippers took to the water to compete.

Originally scheduled and attempted in June, the regatta was abandoned due to lack of wind and extremely high temperatures that resulted in one competitor being taken off his boat suffering from heat exhaustion.

Saturday’s conditions were near perfect with a high temperature in the mid-70s and a north wind of 10-12 knots. The competitors sailed a 6.5-mile course in Mobile Bay, which took the first boat across the finish line in just under two hours.

Race participants were: Erik Schmitz (2nd place Class B), Charlie Livaudais (1st place Class D), Rick Matteis (1st place Class C), Fred Chadsey (1st place Class B and Overall Winner), Steve Adams (1st place Class A), Jack Ardrey (3rd place Class B), Paul Ring (3rd place Class D), Buck Monroe, Dick Davis (2nd place Class D), Pat Noonan, Jerry Hall (3rd place Class C), Rick Byrne (2nd place Class C), Dan Herzog and Jim “Chappie” Chapman.
