BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Spanish Fort Toros claimed the boys 2016 Bay Area Roundball Classic championship with a 62-49 title-game win over Class 7A Fairhope at Faulkner State Community College Saturday night.
Trae Barry led the Toros attack scoring a game-high 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for Spanish Fort. Three other Toros posted double-digit scores: Michael Meador had 16, Terrin Atkinson had 15 and Jeric Packer added 11.
Fairhope was led in scoring by Benni Gambino with 16 points while Tevin Brown and Kyler Crowley contributed 11 points each and C.J. Edwards added nine.
The Toros, ranked No. 5 in the most recent ASWA (Alabama Sports Writers Association) poll, improved to 11-2 with the victory. The poll was released prior to the start of the Roundball Classic tournament.
Spanish Fort defeated No. 3 ranked Daphne 66-60 in the first round of the tournament. The Trojans (14-1) were undefeated (12-0) before the loss to Spanish Fort last Wednesday. Daphne defeated Robertsdale 62-34 in the consolation bracket of the Roundball Classic earlier Saturday.
Amari Solomon scored 16 points to lead Daphne and Jacob Williams added 11 points for the Trojans in that game.
Also, earlier in the tournament’s final round, Baldwin County defeated Gulf Shores 71-60. Tyler Lamar scored 26 points to lead the BCHS Tigers while Jamerious Anderson added 13 for the Tigers who improved to 6-5 with the win. The Dolphins were led by Judah Wilson who scored 24 points for Gulf Shores.
In the title game, the Pirates built an early 12-3 lead with an early 8-0 in the first quarter and took a 23-16 advantage into the second period.
The Toros’ double-teaming of the Pirates Murray State signee Tevin Brown who also picked up his third foul before the half.
The Pirates pulled even at 29-29 three minutes, nine seconds before the break and took the lead on a Meador steal and bucket conversion. The Spanish Fort defense held Fairhope to six points in the second quarter and built a 36-29 lead at the half.
The Pirates cut the Toros’ halftime lead to three points (42-39) with a 10-6 scoring run, but Spanish Fort countered and held on for the win.
"Fairhope got off to a great start,” said Spanish Fort coach Dru Powell. “And with one of the best players in the area and the state ( in Brown), we knew we had our work cut out for us. We focused on pressuring him and limit his opportunites and were fortunate to get ahead and win the ball game. I feel like our post players played well, I feel like everything is starting to come together well. We're really playing unselfish basketball right now."
He added that getting the first-round win over Daphne was a good confidence booster.
“It was very exciting, (that) night,” he said. “Two good teams going after each other. Great atmosphere. Great crowd. I thought both teams played real well. We were able to defend well and take advantage of the opportunities when we could.”
Fairhope coach Spencer Segrest said early foul trouble, particularly on Brown and Spanish Fort’s height advantage inside made it difficult to keep up the early lead-setting pace.
"Foul trouble killed us,” said. “It's tough. We hit some shots early. Our guys competed and played hard, though. I can't ask for anything more from them. I'm so proud of their efforts."
Barry also scored 17 points with 13 rebounds in the win over Daphne and scored 22 points in the Toros’ 69-53 win over Baldwin County High in semifinal round Friday.
"I feel like we had more of an advantage (in the game) with our size,” the Spanish Fort senior said. “The coaches told us to fight our way back and we knew what we needed to do."
This was the second Roundball Classic victory for the Toros who also won in 2013. Daphne was the defending champion and also won the title in 2014. Fairhope won it in 2015 and Robertsdale won the inaugural county championship game in 2012.
