DAPHNE, Ala. — Alicia Wyman, 21, of Daphne, died Sunday morning in a car accident at the U.S. Highway 98 and County Road 64 intersection, police said, and the three survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Daphne Police Chief David Carpenter said the accident happened around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, and it involved a 1997 two-door Acura heading south on the highway and a 2002 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck heading west on County Road 64.
Daphne police Sgt. Ken Lassiter — one of the investigating officers at the crash scene — said Mobile resident Laura McDowell was driving the pick-up truck, and Wesley Jacobs was the passenger. He said Wyman was the passenger of the Acura, and Anthony Mitchell was the driver of the vehicle. Jacobs and Mitchell also are of Daphne.
Lassiter said Wyman was “definitely not wearing her seat belt,” while the survivors were.
“It was a head injury,” Lassiter said about Wyman’s cause of death. “Upon impact, she was flown inside the vehicle and struck part of the front windshield at the A-post, which is a structural part of the windshield.”
“All three surviving people were injured,” Daphne police Lt. Judson Beedy said. “There were two people in each vehicle. Of the three that survived, two were (flown) by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center and the third was transported there by ambulance.”
Lassiter said all three surviving people have been released from the hospital.
“(McDowell) was released at around 9:30 a.m. the day of the crash,” Lassiter said. “She had minor injuries. (Mitchell and Jacobs) were released later that day, but they did have lacerations to their head and needed stitches.”
Carpenter said one of the automobiles must have run the traffic light at the intersection, causing the accident, but it’s unknown whether the car or the truck was at fault.
“It’s still under investigation,” Beedy said. “We’re still trying to determine which vehicle ran the red light.
“The investigating officer has talked to all three surviving officers and they all say their vehicle had the green light.”
Beedy said Daphne police are trying to obtain video of the accident or determine exactly when the accident happened to determine who had the red light.
“We’re not sure of the exact time of the accident,” Beedy said. “We’ve contacted local businesses around there attempting to get video, but I don’t think there will be (footage) of that particular intersection.”
When asked if there could have been a malfunction with the traffic light at the intersection, Beedy said it’s possible, but “it’s not likely.
“The traffic lights have worked normally since then and we’ve had no complaints prior to the accident.”
Police said there is no indication of alcohol being a factor of the accident.
