2.5 miles of road paving up for bid in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. — There are approximately 2.5 miles of road up for bid to be resurfaced in Gulf Shores in the coming months says public works director Mark Acreman.

There is a list of roads and streets that need repair that will be part of the bid, and if the numbers are competitive, Acreman says the city should be able to implement all of the streets on that list.

“There is not a lot of work out there right now, so the numbers should be good,” said Acreman, regarding the bids that will be presented.

So how does the city decide which streets get the facelift?

“It is strictly based on which ones are in the worse condition,” Acreman said. “We go out and look at which ones are cracking.”

There is cracking, and then there is alligator cracking which includes longitudinal as well as horizontal cracking. It is those surfaces that the city tries to address first.

“A perfect example is Clubhouse right here beside City Hall. It has become a thoroughfare all the way around to Fort Morgan Road. It is definitely in need of an overlay project.”

There is a budgeted item for street resurfacing, and the amount is based on city revenue.

Presently, Acreman said there is around $400,000 available for the project.

Following the bidding process, Acreman said he hopes they can have the work up and going by October.
