SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Three men who had set sail for a 333-mile kayaking trip from Montgomery to Mobile — benefiting Alabama’s two Children’s Miracle Network hospitals — arrived at the Blue Gill restaurant Tuesday.
Mark Byal, Brent Williams and Allen Knight, forestry industry professionals with Alabama’s Log A Load for Kids, made it in at approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Spanish Fort restaurant.
The three committed to the 11-day trip down the Alabama River to help the state’s abused, injured or critically injured children, according to a news release for Kayaking for Kids.
The trip began in Montgomery Aug. 2 with a pre-launch celebration for the kayakers.
The three spent 12 to 14 hours paddling per day, Tracy Holley, a spokesperson, said.
“It’s really a labor of love on their behalf,” she said. “They have a passion for these children and are committed to helping them.”
The kayakers love for helping others grew after visiting child patients in hospitals.
“We were overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the people of Alabama during ‘Miracle Miles 1 and 2,’” Byal said.
Log A Load for Kids is a fundraising program that helps loggers, foresters, landowners and product manufacturers unite to help benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Since the program began in 1992 it has distributed more than $5.2 million to support the Children’s Miracle Network.
The three participated in a 12-day, 286-mile “Miracle Miles” hike from Mobile to Birmingham in March 2007, and an eight-day hike for 139 miles from the Tennessee state line to Birmingham in October 2007 that raised $130,000 for the network.
