SPANISH FORT, Ala.—“Just One Tree contest winner” Addie Hill recently joined her dad and the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center staff for an evening paddle.
It was the maiden voyage of a canoe that she won by guessing how many seeds were in the “Wheel of Misfortune.” The “Just One Tree” exhibit—which earlier this year opened at 5 Rivers—featured a turnable called the “Wheel of Misfortune.” As the wheel turned, all seeds collected from a popcorn tree in a growing season passed through its hourglass.
Anyone under 18 was given a chance to guess just how manynseeds came from “Just One Tree” for a chance to win a canoe. The prize package included a 14-foot canoe, a youth and adult personal flotation device, two paddles, a first-aid kit, dry bag, compass, and flashlight, a guided canoe trip with 5 Rivers staff and more.
Addie’s trip took the paddlers into Justin’s Bay, just in time for a picturesque sunset.
A variety of wildlife was spotted. At least two purple gallinules were seen, along with a baby alligator.
By the end of the paddle, a full moon illuminated the water, helping the two find their way back.
Spanish Fort Bass Pro Shops donated the prize canoe; 5 Rivers Delta Safaris provided the rest of the party with canoes and kayaks for the paddle.
