5 Rivers to hold wine fest

The arrival of October, which usually brings cooler breezes, will also bring The Wine Festival at Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.

The full wine festival is not your typical wine tasting, festival chairwoman Ann Stein said. George McKee, an owner of Vino e Grappa in Daphne, said he jumped at the chance to participate in a wine festival.

“This area is ready for a wine festival like this,” he said.

Sherrie Graham, publicity and marketing director for the event, said she is expecting around 750 participants to attend.

Both Stein and McKee said that this is the first time this area will have an actual wine festival complete with music, food and, of course, wine.

Proceeds will benefit the Service Center in Mobile, which assists approximately 3,000 people a month with basic items, said board chairwoman Sister Carolyn Oberkirch.

The Service Center helps provide emergency assistance with rent, food, utilities, clothing allotment and household items, as well as some prescription medicines in conjunction with Ozanan Pharmacy.

Any economic bracket can be considered. The Center is nondenominational.

“I think this is going to be a fun event in a beautiful setting that will help provide people’s basic needs — that’s a pretty good combo,” Oberkirch said.

McKee agreed to help set up distributors and advise them on what wines to serve and what cost to charge. So far, 11 wine vendors have signed on to participate.

For wine enthusiasts, McKee said to “Let wine hit all the taste buds.”

There will be an assortment of white wines, sweet wines, sparkling wines/champagnes, and light reds to heavy cabernets, and they will all be served at the correct temperature, McKee said. Food vendors including Felix’s, Fresh Market, Reflection Catering, Naman’s Catering and Original Oyster House among others will be participating. Wine seminars will also be available in the conference room at the resource center.

The festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center on Battleship Parkway. Local chefs will be on hand to demonstrate preparation of some of the cuisine of the Gulf coast region and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Entertainment will be provided by J. B. Davis, a blues keyboard musician, from New Orleans, who relocated to Pensacola after Hurricane Katrina. The events schedule includes a “Dine & Wine Prelude Dinner” at Ruth’s Chris Steak House or The Fairhope Inn & Restaurant on Thursday, Oct. 4. In the late afternoon, there will also be a live auction for wine, dinner tickets and other miscellaneous items.
