• Goat mom gives birth to quadruplets

ELSANOR, Alabama — The McCurdy family of Elsanor experienced a Christmas miracle of sorts when one of their goats gave birth to quadruplets in December on their farm.

Business owners in Robertsdale for more than 30 years, Rose, her husband William and their son Mike McCurdy moved to the farm off of U.S. Highway 90 in Elsanor a few years ago and started Meme’s Poultry and Quail Sales, offering chicks, ducks, turkeys, quail, guineas, peafowl and bunnies.

Soon after starting the business, Rose McCurdy said, they purchased goats from a petting zoo. Ever since they have been breeding and selling goats on their farm, mostly for use as pets.

They currently have 10 breeding females that give birth twice a year, once in the spring and once in the winter.

“Most often when they give birth, they will have one or two at a time,” she said.

When it came time to give birth in December, McCurdy said they noticed that one of their goats, named Boo, was getting a little fatter than the others.

“When knew she was definitely going to have more than one,” she said. While having twins is a common occurrence among goats, three is extremely rare, but four is almost unheard of, she said.

“I’ve been told to have four that all survive is something really special,” she said.

And that’s exactly what happened. On Dec. 28, just a few days after Christmas, Boo gave birth to four healthy babies.

In all the McCurdy’s 10 goats gave birth to nearly 20 kids, most of which had already been spoken for by the third week of January.

The McCurdy’s are already preparing for the next go-round of births, which should be some time in April, but they will always remember their Christmas miracle.
