A Fairhope Find opens in Robertsdale

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — A Fairhope Find held a ribbon cutting with the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Aug. 2 celebrating the opening of the business at 23777 Highway 59 in Robertsdale.

A Fairhope Find is an eclectic collection of antique and vintage; furniture, glassware, china porcelain, jewelry, books, architectural, paintings, engravings, prints, sculpture, decorative items, coins, currency and other items. Many interests are included in their offerings.

A Fairhope Find also buys gold, silver, coins, and all the other above mentioned items.

“It has contributed to an understanding of what we do,” said Kevin McCandless, owner of A Fairhope Find. “People have a better understanding that dealers have to make a living at this or there will be no one to buy the things they want to sell.”

A Fairhope Find was purchased as a going concern, by McCandless, in 2008. At the time it was located in downtown Fairhope. McCandless moved A Fairhope Find to Robertsdale in March of 2011.

“Between the recession and the oil spill in 2010, I didn’t feel that the retail environment supported the amount of rent that was being asked in Fairhope. My wife and I started looking outside of Fairhope for a location that was suitable for a shop and had good traffic flow. I decided to keep the name since there are many people who visit Fairhope that will remember it and be looking for the same place.”

A Fairhope Find’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. most Sundays. “Sometimes I have things to do on Sunday that keep me from opening the shop. If I’m just going to be sitting around I might as well be here,” he said. There will also be other sporadic times when he will be closed. “I have to have some time to go out and find the things that people want. It doesn’t all just come in the door.”

The one thing that can be said about A Fairhope Find is that it is about entertainment as much as it is about sales. “I have the philosophy that when I am not enjoying the work anymore, I will give it up. I enjoy the people and hearing about all of their collections and adventures in antiques. I have a few stories to tell myself. It’s fun to share them.”
