DAPHNE, Ala.—The princesses took a day off from ruling their kingdoms while Superman and Spiderman joined them for an end-of-the-summer celebration.
The Neighborhood School on Thursday culminated its summer Stay-n-Play program with a dance party; each student came dressed as their favorite storybook character.
Girls donned gowns and tiaras while boys showed up as caped crusaders, knights and football players.
Alexis Wetzel, 11, was crowned “Queen of the Ball,” a duty not without its responsibility.
“I told her the only duty is to return to crown next year’s queen,” school director Carrie Ann Toombs said.
Wetzel—who received a plaque for being the longest full-time client—will begin at Spanish Fort Middle School in the fall.
“She’s been here since she was 2 or 3 years old,” Toombs said.
Each teacher led their students to the dance floor, where they were greeted by a chorus of “Awww”s and camera flashes from admiring parents.
“All of the members of the fairytale kingdom were dancing with joy at this event!” Viki McGinty, a guest at the ball and a kindergarten teacher at Daphne Elementary School said. “The kids were absolutely adorable dressed up as their favorite characters.”
Once introductions were completed, parents joined their children on the dance floor.
Among some of the favorites were: Los del Rio’s “Macarena”; the Isley Brothers’ “Shout”; and M.C. Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This.”
