A little help for Valentine hopefuls: Feb. 14-17 events for date-night planning

Valentine’s Day is one day out of 365 each year when holiday tradition asks that we honor that special person who puts up with the best and worst of us. Whether a spouse, significant other or the possessor of puppy love’s present phase, it’s a time to revel in the act of loving. Butterflies in the stomach, starry eyes, general distraction and blank gaze accompany the much revered marvel celebrated every Feb. 14. For the hopeless romantics still out there, or for the dutiful spouses thereof, find help for thoughtfulness-block with this list of events.

Heritage Arts & Camellia Festival in Elberta

Baldwin County Heritage Museum’s first annual Heritage Arts & Camellia Festival will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it will benefit the Museum and its programs for heritage education.

Held on the grounds of BCHM, located at 25521 Highway 98 E in Elberta, the Festival will feature heritage artists, a camellia arrangement contest and a camellia bloom display.

The museum will showcase exhibits and demonstrations highlighting Baldwin County’s early rural and family culture. South Alabama Antique Tractor and Engine Club will display tractors and a presentation on camellias will be given. Free camellia blooms go to the first 100 visiting ladies, and, in addition to free admission to the museum, exhibits, activities, and attractions, the event will feature door prizes, a raffle and silent auction.

Camellia bloom registration is 9-10 a.m. with judging at 11. Interested vendors may contact the Museum at 251-986-8375 or email BCHM@gultel.com. The Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit facility and asks that guests “Bring the family and a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.”

Art exhibit in Fairhope

Layered collage paintings, abstract expressionism and photography are three new exhibits by Joyce McAdams, Kate Merritt Davis and Chris Hartsfield featured through Feb. 23 at the Eastern Shore Art Center. Enjoy “A Sense of Beauty,” artwork by Joyce McAdams; “Wandering,” artwork by Kate Merritt Davis; and “Down the Street…Around the Corner,” photographs by Chris Hartsfield alongside lovely downtown Fairhope.

Book signing in Gulf Shores

New author Anne Mitchell, of Orange Beach, and author Maverick MD gave love an ‘F’ for Valentine’s Day and asked people all over the world what this means to them. “F LOVE!” is a new book that is due for its official release right before spring 2013, but there will be a special, pre-release signing Feb. 14 in Gulf Shores.

Mitchell will be signing books at The Hangout on Valentine’s Day from 2 to 6 p.m., followed by a couples’ dinner for those who wish to extend the evening. Contact The Hangout for more on the Valentine’s dinner: The Hangout 101 E Beach Blvd., Gulf Shores, 251-948-3030.

Valentine’s dinner at Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs

Jesse’s Restaurant will offer four courses for $100 per couple. Taste buds will be tempted with gourmet dishes, as visual delight finds inspiration in presentation and ambiance.

Course one includes Roasted Oysters Brie , Tuna Tartare and Braised Veal Cheek; course two features Baby Field Greens, Pear Carpaccio and Butternut Squash Bisque; course three offers Grilled Filet of Beef, Butter pPached Wild Striped Bass and Pan Roasted Free Range Breast of Chicken; course four is a Chocolate-covered Strawberry Cheesecake Heart for two.

“Lyric Libations” by The Choral Society of Pensacola

The Choral Society of Pensacola will perform “Lyric Libations” – a gala evening of entertainment, food and wine – on Friday, Feb. 15, 5:30-8 p.m.

Jazz vocalist Ellen Vinson will provide entertainment, along with pianist David Shelander. Guests can look forward to additional musical entertainment, heavy hors d’oeuvres, fine wines and a 50/50 drawing.

“Lyric Libations” will be held at Dollarhide’s Music Center, located at 41 South Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola. Reservations are $25 per person. Payment can be made in advance or at the door. Movies at Pensacola Saenger

“Sleepless in Seattle” is reminiscent of the traditional, warm and fuzzy, romantic tear-jerkers and was actually inspired by Saturday’s movie “An Affair to Remember,” which is considered “one of the most romantic films of all time,” by the American Film Institute.

Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

“An Affair to Remember” – Starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr

Tickets cost $5 each at the Saenger Theatre Box Office. The Box Office will open each night one hour prior to show time and all movies will be seated on a first-come-first-served basis.

MSO music of George Gershwin at Mobile Saenger

The first program of the American Masters project by the Mobile Symphony Orchestra will feature the music of American musical genius George Gershwin on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2:30 p.m. in the Mobile Saenger Theatre.

British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor will perform Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue,” with guest conductor John Morris Russell. Grosvenor, a world-renown musician, will also perform Maurice Ravel’s jazz-influenced “Piano in G Major.”

The orchestra will also perform Dvorak’s “Carnival Overture, opus 92.”

“Aside from the peaceful interlude, ‘Carnival Overture’ is all rambunctious energy, a clear display of Dvorak’s joyous enthusiasm for life,” according to to Gregg Gustafson, MSO’s chief executive officer.

The second half of the concert will be all Gershwin, beginning with the all-orchestral “Symphonic Picture” of music from Porgy and Bess, followed by “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Short Attention Span Theatre at Pensacola Little Theatre

Six, one-act plays at Pensacola Little Theatre will have you and your Valentine rolling in the aisles as they explore the “crazy and comic twists of the modern relationship.”

Performance will be held at 8 p.m. Feb 14 special treats for you and your special someone. Enjoy delicious desserts and Chocolate or French Kiss martinis for only $50 per couple or $25 per person. Seating for this event it limited to Café tables, so make reservations.

Regular performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15, 16 and 21-23; and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17.

This Valentine’s production is meant for adult audiences as PLT’s Studio 400 series may contain adult language and situations. “The Servant of Two Masters” play in Pensacola

This situational comedy by Carlo Goldoni runs 8 p.m. Feb. 14-16; 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17; 8 p.m. Feb. 21-23; and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Mainstage Theatre of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82 of The University of West Florida.

As you might guess, Truffaldino becomes the servant of two, different masters. Hilarious scenes of disaster ensue as he tries to juggle duties between their ever intertwining lives.
