DAPHNE, Ala.—The United States Sports Academy and the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis have signed an agreement allowing the academy to grant credit in the form of continuing education units to students successfully completing certain Red Cross courses.

The first eligible offering is First Aid for Coaches, an online course co-written by the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis and United States Olympic Committee. It presents American Red Cross first-aid principles in a context of sports and prevention of sports-related injuries.

Some high school coaches are required to complete the course as part of admission to professional associations.

For example, some member associations of the National Federation of State High School Associations require coaches to enroll. A desire to assist these state-level organizations in preparing interscholastic teacher-coaches for their dual roles in academics and athletics was an impetus for the Red Cross/academy project, a spokesperson said.
