DAPHNE — They played “Anchors Aweigh” at the end of the Bayside Academy 9-4 win over B.C. Rain Saturday.
The Admirals pulled away late from a close one with the visiting Raiders to get the home-opening win before setting sail for an interstate road trip to the Mississippi Mid State tournament this weekend.
The Admirals are at 6-1 with their next home game hosting J.U. Blacksher March 9 at 4 p.m. and will play their first area matchup in a doubleheader on the road at T.R. Miller March 11.
"We had a tough doubleheader at Mobile Christian last night, so I'm proud of our guys for battling back," said Bayside head coach Doug Leffard. "We got down early. B.C. Rain is young but very talented and coach ( William ) Smith and his staff have done a great job there. They will be a force, but we came back, played well enough to get the win."
Leffard is glad to get off to a good start, but always cautious about looking more than one game ahead.
"We definitely need to keep working. At this point seven games into it, you get to see where you are and what you need to improve on. And our guys know we need to improve on a lot and that's important as we get ready to take on some tough teams in the area."
Saturday, senior righthander John Stassen scored the win to go 2-0. Strong pitching and clutch hitting has played a part in the 6-1 start. The night before at MCS, Justin Raines picked up his first win 8-2 over the Leopards while Joe Vincent (2-0) got the win in the nightcap 11-7. Daniel Beebe struck out 14 in non-decision relief.
The Admirals exploded at the plate for Raines scoring seven in the top of the ninth to take the extra inning lead before holding off the MCS rally. Beebe and Stassen had two hits and two RBIs each while Raines added a pair of hits himself.
In game one, Joby Allen had three hits including a home run for BA and Josh Bernor added two hits in the seven-inning game.
On Saturday, Stassen went six innings scattering four hits with seven strikeouts. He got offensive support from Geoffrey Brooks' single and two-RBI double. Beebe had an RBI triple and a sac-fly, Goffrey Stinebaugh had two hits and scored two and Stassen tripled and singled.
