Advisory committee sets June 29 meeting to update Spanish Fort residents on community center plans

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The public will be briefed June 29 on design and funding developments concerning Spanish Fort’s proposed municipal complex and community center.

The project’s advisory committee has set the meeting for 9 a.m. at City Hall on Spanish Fort Boulevard.

Mayor Joe Bonner said the city has already set aside $2.4 million of the slightly more than $8 million budget Daphne design firm Forrest Daniell and Associates has set for the project – which includes furnishings. Grant-funding options are being explored to help fund the balance.

The Planning Commission voted June 12 to forward a positive recommendation for the requested rezoning of the 18-acre site at the intersection of Spanish Fort Boulevard and Blakeley Way, and discussion of the project’s proposed land use and site plan are expected to dominate planners’ discussions during an informal 6 p.m. June 27 work session, also slated for City Hall.

Bonner said even if the City Council accepts the commission’s recommendation and grants the required rezoning request, the step only positions the city to take the project to bid. It does not greenlight construction.

If constructed, the 29,000-square-foot complex would include a multipurpose building; administrative building; public works building; Baldwin Rural Area System terminal; senior center; library; post office; two additional buildings to accommodate future growth; and a recreational area. Preliminary drawings indicate the recreational area could accommodate a cascading pond area as well as an outdoor amphitheater.
