Aggressive campaign efforts seen in Daphne race

DAPHNE, Ala. — Prior to yesterday’s municipal election — which resulted in a runoff between incumbent Fred Small and three-time Daphne mayor Harry Brown —  some candidates gave aggressive efforts to get out their message, in addition to participation in public forums to present their platforms.

A Daphne Bulletin reporter observed clerks at mayoral candidate Fred Small’s Fastime service station wearing clothing that supported the incumbent. Ernie Berger and Harry Brown both had Web sites that purported to tout unique messages; Berger — who often stressed government transparency in his speeches — posted full-length YouTube videos of the candidate forums, and in newspaper ads stressed that the cameras used cost a mere $130, perhaps contending future fiscal responsibility, if elected. He also had a sandwich named after him: the "Ernie burger." Brown — Daphne’s mayor from 1992-2004 — had an Internet portal to his campaign titled “Bring Back Brown” that boasted how he “produced 12 years of balanced budgets while maintaining the highest bond rating for the city.”
