• Bayside rocks three Class 4A schools in 7-on-7 pool play
BREWTON— The T.R. Miller Tigers hosted the Lower Alabama (LA) Air Raid Challenge 7-on-7 tournament Friday in Brewton. Bayside Academy’s Admirals took the top seed going into the elimination bracket but inclement weather with lightning forced the cancellation of the remaining events.
“I thought that was pretty good start to a tournament like this for us, though,” said Bayside head coach Phil Lazenby. “The guys played real well in a pretty tough field. We we’re looking forward to seeing what we might do the rest of the way, but you can’t fight Mother Nature.”
The two pool field included Bayside, Luverne, Mobile Christian, Montgomery Catholic, Pace (Fla.), St. Luke’s, Straughn, Thomasville, the host TRM and UMS-Wright.
In their pool the Class 3A Admirals knocked off St. Luke’s (2A), Straughn (4A), Montgomery Catholic (4A) and Thomasville (4A). Bayside picked up the top seed based on wins, losses and overall point differentials.
“We didn’t give up a lot of scores, not many points on defense so that was looking good for us. Very pleased with our secondary and our offense overall — things were just coming together for us.”
Bayside opens the regular season at home with Class 5A Faith Academy’s Rams calling on Freedom Field in Daphne Aug. 28. The Admirals jump into Class 3A Region 1 play with a Sept. 4 trip back to Brewton to meet T.R. Miller.
