Alabama has one of the highest rates of domestic violence per 1,000 people in the nation, and ranks third in the number of women murdered by men per 1,000 people.
A 2008 study of domestic violence programs in Alabama conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence found that on an average day, 649 victims of domestic violence were served in some way. There were 344 domestic violence victims who sought refuge in shelters or transitional housing. The remaining 305 individuals who sought help that day received services that included counseling, legal advocacy or safety planning.
Domestic violence programs in Alabama answered more than 9 hotline calls every hour, adding up to a total of 217 hotline calls answered in Alabama in an average day.
Last year in Alabama there were 40 domestic homicides. Domestic homicides accounted for 13 percent of the 318 homicides reported in Alabama for the year. Seventy-seven percent of the domestic homicide victims were females. There were only 34 domestic homicides in Alabama in 2008, which only accounted for 10 percent of all homicides in Alabama that year.
Of the 20,167 violent offenses reported in 2009, 12 percent were domestic violence incidents. Domestic violence was indicated in 2,368 offenses reported: in 40 homicides, 267 rapes, 85 robberies, and in 1976 aggravated assaults. Of the 20446 violent offenses reported in 2008, 10 percent were domestic violence incidents. Domestic violence was indicated in 2,000 offenses reported: in 34 homicides, 233 rapes, 118 robberies; and n 1615 aggravated assaults.
There were 29,976 domestic simple assaults, which represent 36 percent of all simple assaults reported in 2009. There were 29940 domestic simple assaults, which represent 36 percent of all simple assaults reported in 2008.
In 26 percent of domestic violence offenses in 2009 the victim was the wife/ex-wife of the offender; in 46 percent the victim was the girlfriend/ex-girlfriend of the offender.
