Alabama’s beaches home to sizzling summer events

GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH, ALA. – Make way to Alabama’s beaches this summer to kick back and relax to the smooth sounds of turquoise waters lapping sugar white sand beaches and to take part in an array of events. The coast is gearing up to host concerts, sporting tournaments, festivals, educationally enriching activities and much more. Ponder the following list of events for great options to satisfy almost anyone.

 

SummerTide Theatre presents “Jubilee – Songs of and about Alabama”

May 31-June 28

8 p.m.

South Baldwin Community Theatre (2022 West 2nd Ave., Gulf Shores)

The University of Alabama’s professional summer musical theatre will grace the stage with “Jubilee – Songs of and about Alabama,” a tribute to the state’s rich musical heritage. Performances will take place each Tuesday through Sunday. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under and $15 each for groups of 10 or more (contact the box office for additional information and reservations for groups). Ocean Camp

June 4-Aug. 9

9 a.m.-12 p.m. (ages 5-8) and 1-4 p.m. (ages 9-12)

Children ages 5 through 12 are encouraged to take part in a fun and educational summer day camp experience. Marine education activities will be guided by ocean literacy principles with a variety of themes. The cost is $125 per session per camper and sessions will take place Tuesdays through Fridays each week.

Music at Meyer Park featuring The Brandon Green Band

June 6

Meyer Park (400 E. 22nd Ave., Gulf Shores)

Green has seen a whirlwind of success with a list of TV appearances under his belt, including a stint on Season 7 of American Idol, runner-up on CMT’s hit show, “Can You Duet?” and the winner of “Your Next Record with Keith Urban.” Born in the small Mississippi town of Lucedale, his diverse influences help this ambitious performer and songwriter craft high-energy songs that are in-tune with today's popular country styles. Shrimp Basket Giving Run

June 8

9 a.m.

The Shrimp Basket (2nd Ave. and Highway 59, Gulf Shores)

Registration includes a specialty-designed race t-shirt, a $10 gift card, water and Powerade, a boxed lunch and two draft beers for those of age. By participating, names will be entered into a drawing for door prizes. Race registration begins at 6 a.m. at Shrimpy's Mini Golf. Parking will be provided at Shrimpy's and Mikee's Seafood. The race will begin at the Shrimp Basket. 5K race registration is $25 and $10 for the 1-mile fun run.

9th Annual Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Shark Adventure Run

July 4

7 a.m.

Flora-Bama (17401 Perdido Key Drive, Pensacola)

Come and enjoy this adventure race or the 1-mile beach fun run. The shark adventure run is a 4.5-mile road and beach run (2 miles on the road and 2.5 miles on the beach). On the beach, particpants will encounter “shark” people. They will be scattered along the course with the purpose of taking the "bait" (or flags) off the belt that all participants will be issued. The sharks are not allowed to touch the runners, but if they gather all three of a runners’ baits, they will not be eligible for any awards. 12th Annual Mobile Big Game Fishing Club (MBGFC) Billfish Limited Tournament

This catch and release billfish, tuna, dolphin and wahoo tournament will feature inboards 32' and under and outboards of any size. Registration received by July 24 costs $200 per angler and $250 per angler on July 26, tournament registration day. There is a minimum of three anglers per boat.
