Albert Lamar King Sr., 76, died Thursday, July 14, 2011 surrounded by his family at his home in Gulf Shores.

He was born in Sebastian, Fla., graduated from New Smyrna Beach (Florida) High School and moved to Gulf Shores in 1953 while working on a shrimp boat.

He spent a lifetime in the shrimp industry in a variety of positions from shrimp boat captain to processing plant owner and, following his retirement, he became widely known as a member of several fisheries management boards and commissions including the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council. In October of 2010, he was honored as the recipient of the Charles H. Lyles Award given by the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission for his contributions to fisheries management.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Callaway King; and son, Albert L. King Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Wallace King of Gulf Shores; daughter, Lillian (Peter) Machen of Gulf Shores; son, Harold (Lynn) King of Youngsville, La.; step-daughter, Caline (Danny) Kaiser of Gulf Shores; step-son, Kenneth (Christie) Wallace of Gulf Shores, daughter-in-law, Rebecca Burroughs King of Gulf Shores; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday, July 18 at Lagoon Baptist Church in Gulf Shores with Dr. Ben Hayes and Dr. Thomas Ayo officiating. Burial will follow at Miller Memorial Cemetery in Gulf Shores.  

Pallbearers are Harold King, Peter Machen, David King, Nathan Machen, Tim Machen, and Kenneth Wallace. Honary pallbearers are Tommy Bush, Clifton Alphin, Phillip Horn, Corky Perrett, Duke McCaw, Shelton Craig, Robbie Bryant, Hollis Byrd, Don Hallex, Ken Brady, Dr. Thomas Farmer, Rayford Knight, and Taylor “Red” Wilkins Jr.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Shell Banks Baptist Church General Fund, 12125 Highway 180, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.
