Albritton wins Senate District 22 primary

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Greg Albritton on Tuesday captured the state Republican Senate District 22 primary to replace Pat Lindsey, D- Butler, who died in January.

In unofficial returns, Albritton received about 57 percent of the votes to defeat Mobile business owner Judy Belk and Danny B. Joyner, a Brewton native and former lieutenant at the Brewton Police Department.

Albritton will face Marc Keahey, D-Grove Hill, in the June 2 general election.

The Alabama Republican Party estimated voter turnout at about 6 percent for the district, which encompasses all or part of Baldwin, Mobile, Escambia, Conecuh, Monroe, Clark, Choctaw and Washington counties.

Baldwin County Probate Judge Adrian Johns said Wednesday that 307 voters cast ballots in the 15 precincts within the district.

“Voting was slow all day and votes were counted by 9 p.m.,” Johns said, which was two hours after polls closed.

According to Johns, Albritton received 59.6 percent of the votes, followed by Belk with 27 percent and Joyner with 13.4 percent. Precincts ranged from Little River to Fairhope.

State Republican Party chairman Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, called Albritton a “true conservative,” following the election.

“The party commends Judy Belk and Danny Joyner for the manner in which they conducted their campaigns,” Hubbard said.

“The people of this district deserve to be represented by a true conservative, someone who will look out for them, not someone who will vote to raise his own taxpayer-funded salary. The only candidate in this race that can make that promise is Greg Albritton.”

Lindsey, 72, of Butler was found dead in his bed while on a hunting trip with State Sen. Roger Bedford, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. and others.
