Alleged car-parts thieves confess

Working on a tip from somone authorities describe only as “in the know,” Daphne Police Department detectives Wednesday searched the home of James Kevin Trehern, 22, of Saraland, to question him about a rash of recent thefts from Eastern Shore Toyota and Tameron Honda.

Trehern confessed to stealing various items from the auto dealerships, Daphne Police Lt. Jud Beedy said.

“We recovered tires, speedometers, floor mats and DVD players,” Beedy said, referring to stolen items found during the search. “We got a whole bunch of things.”

Trehern’s questioning led authorities to Thomas J. Lewis, 20, of Whistler, who also confessed to the car dealership thefts.

A large amount of the stolen property was recovered in a residence in Grand Bay. The resident was unaware the property was stolen, according to authorities.

“He didn’t know it was stolen,” Beedy said. “He immediately turned it over.”

Detectives have recovered almost 80 percent of the stolen property and will continue their efforts to find the remaining items.

Authorities believe the two suspects may have sold or traded some of the property.

Trehern and Lewis are currently the only suspects involved in the case.

They have both been charged with first-degree theft of property and second-degree theft of property.

The two could face more charges as the investigation unfolds, police said.
