Alleged palm tree thief caught

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — A 27-year-old man living in Robertsdale was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center Thursday on a variety of charges in connection with the theft of palm trees and plants a week ago.

Warrants were being drawn up by Summerdale Police Department on Patrick Osullivan Donovan involving theft of property, first-degree attempted assault, eluding and reckless endangerment in connection with a theft at Magnolia Landscape Supply Inc. Tuesday night, June 10.

Donovan was being held on a total bond of $25,000, according to a Corrections Center spokesman on Friday.

According to Summerdale Police Chief Dwain Riebeling, shortly after midnight on Tuesday night of this week a Mobile County deputy spotted a white Toyota pickup loaded down with plants. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle the driver sped away.

The truck’s tires were eventually spiked by authorities and the vehicle went off in a ditch, Riebeling said. The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene while a passenger in the truck stayed in the vehicle. The driver left behind his wallet, driver’s license and cellphone.

After interviewing the vehicle passenger, Roy Smith, authorities checked out the trailer where Smith lived and found what turned out to be a stolen Blazer with a Mobile County tag at the site. Smith told police he knew nothing about a Blazer.

Donovan had been spotted driving the Blazer and was eventually arrested at Smith’s trailer and charged with receiving the stolen vehicle and marijuana possession.

Authorities don’t believe Smith had anything to do with the landscape supply theft and has not been charged in connection with the June 10 incident, Riebeling said. Smith told police he had lost his job and was helping Donovan plant shrubs.

When Summerdale Officer T.J. Palkovic and a reserve officer riding with him the night of June 10 saw Donovan following his arrest, both identified Donovan as the driver of the truck that ran from them at Magnolia Landscape Supply and nearly struck the reserve officer in the process.

The chase that ensued that night reached speeds of 125 to 130 miles an hour as Donovan allegedly fled north on Ala. Highway 59 to Robertsdale, where he eventually escaped after taking numerous turns inside the city.

Following Donovan’s arrest, police found the $1,500 worth of plants and palm trees allegedly taken by Donovan and the Toyota pickup in which he made his escape, Riebeling said. The truck and plants were found on College Avenue in Robertsdale where Donovan is alleged to have been doing landscape work for the property owner since Donovan was short of rent money.
