SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Five Rivers Delta Resource Center will welcome the president of the Mobile Bay Kayak and Canoe Association, Mike Bosarge, when he gives a seminar on alligator safety this Saturday.
Bosarge’s free presentation, “Living With Alligators” will be held from 1 to 2 p.m.
Better known to his friends as “Gatorbait,” Bosarge has been paddling a kayak around Mobile Bay and the Mobile-Tensaw Delta for years.
One of the most common questions Five Rivers gets, regarding canoe and kayak safety, has to do with big toothy predators around, according to a spokesperson.
Bosarge will talk about the dos and (perhaps more importantly) the don’ts of alligator safety.
He will also talk about the 1700s explorer and naturalist William Bartram and what he had to say the first time he saw an alligator.
Perception of, and interaction with, humans have affected these pre-dinosaur age animals throughout the years, a Five Rivers spokesperson said. The extent of that affect will be another topic of conversation.
After the seminar, attendees can take a discounted Delta safari tour on the pontoon boat, “The Pelican.”
If going, you can call to reserve your space at 259-8531, and follow up your Saturday adventure talk about alligators with a boat ride to explore where they live.
