SOMETHING UNUSUAL ABOUT YOURSELF: I can't stand to touch chalk or write with it. It gives me the chills — this aversion happened later in life. I am so thankful for dry erase boards and dry erase markers. I also can never make it home from drive through without eating my French fries.
Amy Good is a first grade teacher at Spanish Fort Elementary School. She teaches all areas, but mostly teaches reading, language arts and math. Good previously taught in Mobile County at Fonde Elementary School before transferring to Baldwin County where she taught at Robertsdale Elementary School. She taught in Robertsdale for five years before arriving at Spanish Fort. Although Good taught second grade her first two years at Fonde Elementary School, she has taught first grade ever since at every school she’s been to.
Good says she has wanted to teach since she was a little girl.
“I used to play school in my basement with my sister and neighbors,” she says. “One of my best Christmas presents was a huge chalkboard I used for playing school. I love kids and enjoy being around them. They are always happy and excited about life.”
Teaching is very rewarding to Good; that’s what she likes most about the occupation.
“In first grade there is a huge emphasis on reading,” Good says. “It’s so inspiring to watch the progress a child makes in reading from the beginning of the year to the end. Watching their growth intellectually, physically and emotionally makes the job so fulfilling.”
Good also enjoys how much her children love “the little things in life.”
“Something as simple as a sticker, a smiley face, a Band-Aid or a snow cone can make their day,” she says.
When Good isn’t teaching, she enjoys working in her yard, boating and spending time with her family — her husband, Brian, and daughter, Caroline — and friends.
