Dr. Barry C. Amyx, 56, a native of Louisville, Ky., and a resident of Spanish Fort, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008.
He was a prominent psychiatrist in the Mobile area for 20 years. Before to locating to Mobile, he practiced in Jackson, Miss., where he was an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi. He also obtained a law degree from the University of Mississippi, while practicing at the University. In 1973, Barry graduated from Harvard University Magna Cum Laude. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine in 1977.
He was in practice in the Mobile area since 1989. He was employed by Altapointe and the Singing River Mental Health Center. He also had a private practice in Daphne. He was a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Southern Medical Association and the Harvard Club.
Survivors include his wife Catherine Amyx; sister, Trina (Tom) Blunt; nephew, Ross Olges, a host of other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and visitation were held Saturday, July 26 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Daphne. A reception was held immediately after the memorial service at the Amyx home.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Mobile Chapter of the Salvation Army, 15 Place and Wings of Life.
