Angel Ride and Concert fundraiser helps families with medical expenses

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — Get on your bikes and ride, then stay for good food, good music and other fundraising opportunities as the 14th annual Angel Ride and Concert kicks off Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31 at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope.

While legendary rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd rocked the stage at last year’s event, this year’s event will be more low-key, said Mary Carolyn McDaniel, one of the event’s organizers.

“This year we wanted to get back to our roots and give our local talent more of an opportunity to shine,” McDaniel said. “In the end it’s really all about the helping children and we think we’re going to have a very successful year providing good family entertainment with a more laid back atmosphere.”

For a $10 admission fee each night, you can enjoy great entertainment under the oak trees at Oak Hollow. Event parking Friday and Saturday is free.

Friday night’s kickoff event will feature Doc Rogers and the Rock Dodgers rock n’ roll band performing on the lodge porch.

The campground opens at 9 a.m. with dry (no water provided) camping slots available for $50, which includes admission for Friday and Saturday.

There will also be a drawdown inside the lodge on Friday night from 6 to 9 p.m. with tickets costing $1,000 per couple, which includes entertainment and dinner.

Attendees for Friday’s event will also be able to participate in the silent auction, which will feature a variety of items available.

“If you see something you like on Friday night, you can buy it right there on the spot,” McDaniel said, “or you can come back Saturday and continue to bid on the item.”

Registration for Saturday’s Angel Ride begins at 9 a.m. and the rally midway reopens for food, fun, music and more merchandise with riders departing Oak Hollow at 11:30. Cost to participate is $35 per rider.

Jerry Byrd will perform old and new country Southern rock and gospel beginning at 10 a.m. There will also be a bike show and the silent auction will continue, along with a raffle, food, drinks and fun.

After the ride, the Wave Length Band will perform at 1 p.m., featuring classic and Southern rock, soul and country to current top 40.

The Rick McNaughton Band, featuring band blues, funk, classic rock and “juke joint” music, will rock on into the night beginning at 5 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for the Rileigh and Raylee Angel Ride Foundation. According to its website, angelride.org, the foundation is dedicated to the mission of assisting families of children who have special medical needs. Families who qualify for benefits receive assistance to help pay for costs associated with the care of these children. Applicants are reviewed by a medical panel and may be eligible for benefits once per calendar year. Hundreds of applicants are reviewed annually and this number continues to grow.

McDaniel, whose granddaughter, Rileigh Glass, was born with Down syndrome, helped organize the event with the help of motorcycle enthusiast Dr. Albert Corte, to support the foundation, which was organized with the family of Raylee Odom, who was born with muscular dystrophy.

Through the annual event and individual donations, the foundation has raised over $1million and funded families with medical expenses more than 900 times, McDaniel said.
