GULF SHORES — You can find “Easy Street” Oct. 5 to 7 and Oct. 12 to 14 at South Baldwin Community Theatre when the cast of “Annie” brings to life the well-known story of an orphan searching for a family.
Set in Depression-era 1930s, the story centers on Little Orphan Annie and a host of characters — some good, some bad — that Annie encounters on her journey. There’s even an appearance by New Deal President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the story.
“Easy Street” is just one of the recognizable songs in the musical that also includes the songs “Tomorrow,” “Maybe,” “You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” and “We’re Getting a New Deal for Christmas.”
Kendall Parrett, 10, of Gulf Breeze, Fla. is Annie. Parrett was a finalist for the role of Annie in the latest Broadway production of the musical and a finalist in the Emerald Coast Junior Idol contest.
The remainder of the cast is comprised of 27 people from all over Baldwin County and a Border collie who takes on the canine role of Sandy.
Principal cast members include Dr. Keith Cooper as Daddy Warbucks; Margaret Cooper as Miss Hannigan; Sharon Watson as Lily; Lee Kibler as Rooster and Dixie Overby as Grace.
They’re joined on stage by 13 orphans and a host of other characters who live, work and scheme at the orphanage, at Daddy Warbucks’ mansion and at the White House.
Jonathan Wallace is the pianist for the show.
“Families are a big part of ‘Annie,’” said Margaret Cooper, director, noting that five family groups appear on stage as actors, singers and orphans. “Thank God for all of the parents who have helped coordinate the show.”
Sharon Watson is the assistant director for “Annie.”
Tickets for the show go on sale Oct. 1, and can be obtained by calling (251) 968-6721.
The Friday and Saturday evening showtime is 7:30, with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
South Baldwin Community Theatre is at 2022 W. Second St., across from the Gulf Shores tennis courts and Bodenhamer Recreation Center.
The theatre was founded in 1972 by the late Rev. Anthony Zoghby, Nancy Holk Totman and the late Herb Anderson.
