Annual class night is July 2

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — July is almost here which means it’s time for Douglasville Alumni Association’s annual class night.

This will be held July 2 at the Bay Minette Civic Center at 7 p.m. All classes are invited and to have space for a representative for the class have an appearance on the program.

So, if you are a graduate of Douglasville High School, we ask that you try to be there and encourage your classmates to be there. The good news is that everyone is invited no matter what school you attended or graduated from.

Proceeds from this function goes toward the scholarship funds. James Cox is the president and is expecting the civic center to be packed.

Union Baptist Church will honor their high school graduates this year with a special reception and awards banquet this Saturday at the church in the fellowship hall. There will be a full, sit-down dinner. The attire is dressy to after five. You must reserve a seat if you plan to attend by contacting Lucinda Freeman.

This is the first awards banquet which is hosted by the scholarship committee. There will be a special program also honoring the seven graduates of Union Baptist.

Their names and the schools they plan to attend are Carolyn Johnson, Florida A&M; Donald Taylor Jr., Troy University; Glenn Harbin Jr., University of Alabama; Jerald Crook, Auburn University; Luther Sanders, Bishop State; Thomas McWilliams Jr., Alabama State; and Felandis Sanders, Faulkner State Community College.

They all received a scholarship from the church at the high school annual awards night, but at this particular banquet, other scholarships are expected to be presented from the church.

Well, maybe I should say one or two more scholarships are expected to be presented based on an essay and achievements by the students.

We are proud of each of the graduates.

Happy belated birthday to Harvey Lee Hamilton. Harvey is a native of Stockton and a graduate of Douglasville High School. He now resides in Huntsville, where he is quite busy.

He has earned many honors and degrees, some of which include a bachelor’s degree in 1962 from Alabama A&M, a master’s degree in 1974 and a doctorate in 1977. Hamilton also served in the Army and had nine military publications, including Missile Systems Support Layout, MQS Military Qualification Standards II and Ordnance Branch (91D) Munition Material Management Grade officer’s manual.

He also is active in his community and the church. Happy birthday to you and keep doing what you can do to keep others. God bless you.

Until next week, let’s pray for this nation and everything going on in our world today. Let’s reach out to help someone in need and remember that whatever we have is only a loan from God.
