ELBERTA, Ala. – It’s almost time for the north shore of Arnica Bay in Josephine, Alabama to start hopping again as preparations begin for the annual Illuminating Autism Fun-raiser at Pirate’s Cove Marina.
Slated May 31 to June 2, organizers expect hundreds of people to come through the doors during the three-day, weekend-long event. The anticipated event benefits High Hopes 4 Autism, an Autism Spectrum Disorder therapy center located on the campus of St. Benedict’s School in Elberta.
“So many people look forward to this event each year,” said Rachael Mueller, director of High Hopes 4 Autism. “Not only is it a fun weekend, but it’s our center’s only fundraising source throughout the year, and our supporters really get behind it.”
Live music and entertainment are the stars of the show, but at High Hopes 4 Autism, Mueller said the stars are the students making daily strides in their therapy.
“The fundraiser provides a revenue source and enables our therapists to provide effective therapy for children and families affected by the disorder that isn’t available to them through the public system,” Mueller said.
In 2012, the Illuminating Autism Fun-raiser raised more than $60,000. The event helps defray costs for the therapy center and the families who utilize High Hopes’ services.
“We hope this year will be even more successful than the previous six years,” Mueller said, adding that more than 200 businesses participate by donating door prizes to the event. Door prizes range from spa gift certificates to movie passes and fishing equipment to artwork.
Aside from live music, there will also be a drawdown for a new Jeep. Because tickets are limited, the drawdown is a popular attraction at the fundraiser.
The Illuminating Autism Fun-raiser is organized and produced by volunteers. Many volunteers are needed in order to make the event a success. Those offering their time and talents by working a two-hour shift receive weekend passes, as well as a t-shirt commemorating the event.
Music for the long-awaited event includes:
Friday, May 31, 8 p.m.: George Porter Jr., Brian Stoltz, Guthrie Trapp and the All Stars
Saturday, June 1, 11 a.m.: Possum Trot
Saturday, June 1, 3 p.m.: Alvin Youngblood Hart
Saturday, June 1, 7 p.m.: Kelly Poole and The Swingset
Sunday, June 2, 11 a.m.: Sugarcane Jane
Sunday, June 2, 3 p.m.: Grayson Capps and The Lost Show Minstrels
Tickets for entrance to the fun-raiser are $10 per day and can be purchased at the gate. All other tickets can be purchased online, at Pirates Cove or from any Illuminating Autism volunteer.
