Annual ‘Go Fly Zone’ takes off Saturday

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Discover the magic of flight at the second annual “Go Fly Zone” event on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the National Naval Aviation Museum aboard NAS Pensacola.

Get into the “zone” with model aircraft demonstrations, live bird exhibitions, a paper airplane-making contest and more.

Visitors will also have a chance to climb inside a real F/A-18 Hornet cockpit, grab the controls and imagine taking off toward the clouds in the pilot’s seat of the same aircraft flown by the prestigious Blue Angels demonstration team.

Guests are encouraged to bring cameras to capture these special moments.

The National Flight Academy team will be on hand to demonstrate one of their high-tech flight simulator prototypes. Be one of the first in the area to experience the excitement and wonder of flight while learning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles.

The complete schedule of events is:

•10 a.m.-noon

Radio-controlled model aircraft demonstrations by Northwest Florida Modelers Inc., inside Blue Angels Atrium.

NFM will perform a model aircraft air show with small radio-controlled electric airplanes.

•10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Just Plane Fun paper airplane crafting inside Blue Angels Atrium.

U.S. Air Force Second Lt. Sean Wolf and Ken Blackburn, Guinness World Record holder for time aloft for a paper airplane, will instruct kids at airplane-crafting stations on different ways create their own high-flying paper airplane.

Blackburn holds the Guinness Record for time aloft for a paper airplane at 27.6 seconds and penned four paper airplane books, “The World Record Paper Airplane Book,” ”Kids’ Paper Airplane Book,”  “Pocket Flyers” and “Aviation Legends Paper Airplane Book.”

•Noon and 1 p.m.

Outta Sight Flight with the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, birds inside Blue Angels Atrium.

The Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida will present a different perspective on the mechanics of flight with two 20-minute discussions and exhibitions of live birds from the sanctuary, including a screech owl, a great horned owl, an American kestrel and an albino turkey vulture boasting an eight-foot wingspan.

The nonprofit organization works year-round to provide care for injured or orphaned indigenous wildlife.

•1:30 p.m.

Just Plane Fun paper airplane flying contest inside Blue Angels Atrium.

You’ve crafted them, now see if they can fly. Kids of all ages are invited to compete in a friendly paper airplane competition, judged by Blackburn. Prizes will be awarded for first-place finishers in each age category.

Admission to the museum is free.

The National Naval Aviation Museum features nearly 300,000 square feet of displays, and is one of the world’s largest aviation museums.

The National Naval Aviation Museum is open daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
