Annual plant sale set for this weekend and Nov. 8

DAPHNE, Ala.—The students at Daphne High in the Agiscience Department are busy this time of year getting their plants ready for the upcoming fall sale.

This is one of the most successful Agriscience programs in any high school, according to a spokesperson.

Lance Harbison and his students work toward providing abundant plants for the public to purchase in the fall and again in the spring.

The proceeds from the plant sale support agriculture programs such as coastal restoration and environmental stewardship and enhance the beauty of our community.

The sales are more than money makers for the students, as they teach how to cultivate, germinate, weed, fertilize and be successful in the growth of bedding plants. Students also feel a pride of ownership toward this project, completely of their own hard work and dedication, a spokesperson said.

The students are partnered with a local garden club that helps in the sale of the plants on two weekends. This year, the dates are Saturday and Nov. 8 from 7:30 to 10 a.m., rain or shine. No advance sales offered.

There will be a variety of colors of pansies, petunias, dianthus, dusty miller, ornamental cabbages and kales. This year, the flats are $9 until the last hour of the last day (Nov. 8) and then there is a discount price of $8 per flat.

If you see a lot going on at Daphne High that day, look for the greenhouses behind the school. There will be strong students to carry and load the plants for you.

Remember, the funds go back to helping the students in the purchases needed to keep the program going strong.
