BAY MINETTE, Ala. – Students will not have to go to school tomorrow, but the day off will not be free. They will have to make up the missed time later this semester.
Citing the extreme temperatures forecast for Tuesday morning, all Baldwin County Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 7. Students will make up the day by going the entire day on Jan. 10 and March 14. These days were originally scheduled as half days.
“We are facing unprecedented weather extremes, with temperatures expected to be in the single digits and the wind chill factor around one degree,” said BCPS communications director Terry Wilhite. “We have some students who leave to get on the bus around 6 a.m. and then ride for 45 minutes to an hour.
“For the students who have to stand out at bus stops, we don’t want to put them in any danger while they wait on busses that could possibly be late because of issues related to the extreme weather.”
While the students will make up their missed time before Spring Break, so school district employees will have to wait until the summer to complete the process. The makes up dates for employees are:
* 9-month employees – teachers – May 28
* 10-month employees – June 9
* Custodial staff – June 23
* 11-month employees – June 16
* ROTC – June 18
* 12-month employees – April 16
* CNP 187-day and 185-day CNP employees – June 2
