ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Lookout…the Bears are coming and they mean business!
Playing the first of seven scrimmage games at the Robertsdale High School practice field on Thursday night, the Golden Bears put their best seven players against seven of the Tate High School Aggies (Cantonment, Fl) best seven on what turned out to be a soggy playing field.
Despite the rain, the Bears came away with the win as they beat the Aggies 71-35 in a two game matchup. RHS head coach Scott Phelps said the game was only supposed to be two 15-minute quarters but they ended up playing four.
“We had some extra time so we decided to play another game and we will be playing different teams over the next few weeks, all seven on seven’s, to get us ready for the season,” Phelps said.
With about 120 players this year, the Bears are gearing up for a good season and senior quarterback Hunter Vaughn (#3), son of Kerie Foley and Justin Vaughn of Robertsdale, is excited about the talent he has to work with this year.
“I think we will do real well. We need to rebuild the defense and the offense is pretty good. I really like our coaches and they are changed some things for the better last year and I think Coach Phelps is doing a great job with us. Coming together as a team and working together to win is a great feeling,” Vaughn said.
His teammates, senior Chase Hadley (#28, WR), junior Sammy Tolbert (#1, RB) and senior Matthew Maddox, Jr. (#7, WR) all have the same goal as Vaughn: Win.
“I love this game, every part of it, and the way we come together to win is the best. Our guys are good, some could be a little more dedicated but overall, they do a good job,” said Hadley, son of Nancy and Craig Hadley of Loxley.
Tolbert, son of Carolyn and Deroyn Tolbert of Loxley, has a feeling they are going to go 10-0 this year and he love the competition of the game and believes his teammates are ready to go and have a great season.
Last but not least, Maddox, son of Matthew and Betty Maddox of Loxley, loves that he has a hard-working team and really enjoys getting out there and playing tough. “I just want to win and I think our coaches are great and I love them all.”
After the game, the team “invaded” Willy T’s in Robertsdsale where they enjoyed a meal and received free drinks as a thank you for their hard work.
