MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile’s Singing Children, the premiere youth chorus on the Gulf Coast, has been selected to perform with other outstanding young musicians at a live taping of the National Public Radio (NPR) program “From the Top” at Mobile’s Saenger Theatre tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The performance, hosted by internationally acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O’Riley, will be broadcast on March 28, at 1 p.m., on 91.3 WHIL, and is being made possible through a generous grant from the Sybil H. Smith Charitable Trust.
The ensemble is comprised of more than 40 boys and girls, and is directed by Susan Hoitt. According to the NPR show’s music producer, Tom Vignieri, the group will perform Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” one of the gems of choral repertoire.
“By selecting Mobile’s Singing Children for the broadcast, From the Top is pleased to bring many of Mobile’s young musicians to the national stage and celebrate the Mobile arts community.”
This taping will highlight the performers’ musical abilities as well as their lives outside of music through interviews with O’Riley.
Performers are selected from a national pool of applicants.
One of the most popular weekly radio programs on public radio, “From the Top’s” variety show format features music, interviews and light-hearted sketches with the country’s most talented pre-college age musicians.
Tickets are $25 at the box office. WHIL member discounts are also available at $15 for adults and $8 for children.
