FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Dr. Roger Jones and Joe Riemer will conduct The Baldwin Pops Band in “A European Vacation” concert on April 27, at 7 p.m., at the Daphne Civic Center. During the annual John Allen Scholarship concert, one outstanding high school senior from Baldwin County will be awarded a scholarship.

Each high school band director was invited to nominate one or more of their seniors to play with the Pops Band and 15 students from six high schools are participating. These students are Shawn Wright (trumpet), Daphne; Macey Davis (clarinet), Katie Kendrick (flute), Ashton McCord (percussion), Tony Perry (percussion) and Matthew Ravel (baritone), Fairhope; Rachel Mosely (percussion), Jeff Parker (alto saxophone) and Stephanie Woods (french horn), Foley; Madi Kreamer (oboe), Gulf Shores; Justin Butcher (tuba), Jose Campos (contra alto clarinet), Brandon Jones (tuba) and Katie Knight (clarinet), Robertsdale; Anna Lee (trumpet) and Kaitlyn Ernandez (bass clarinet), Spanish Fort.

When he passed away at age 80, John Allen was the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops. At age 74 he decided to learn how to play the tuba. Allen knew that most tuba players start learning their instrument in a middle school band so he called the Fairhope Middle School Band director at that time, Betty Godwin, and asked if there was an opening in the sixth grade beginner band. Godwin welcomed him, and Allen not only became a student of the tuba, he became an inspiration to his fellow students.

He progressed with his band peers to the 7th grade band then the 8th grade band, where he remained until his death.

He was very supportive of educating children on the value of music in their lives. When the Baldwin Pops Band formed in 1997, Allen became a charter member. The scholarship fund was named in his memory.

The band will perform music from or about Belgium, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Russia, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “A Symphonic Portrait,” arranged by Jerry Nowak; The Beatles’ “Love,” arranged by Jay Bocook; “Eagle Squadron” by Kenneth J. Alford; “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich; “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger; “Italian Holiday” by Robert Longfield; “March of the Belgium Paratroopers” by Pierre Leemans; and “Marche Militaire Francaise” by Camille Saint-Saens.

Principal clarinetist Linde Lynn will be featured on the third movement “Polacca” from Carl Maria von Weber’s “Second Concerto for Clarinet.” Lynn graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor of music degree in 1983, and has played in the Baldwin Pops Band since moving to to the county in 2001.

The concert will be repeated outdoors when the Baldwin Pops begins its series of Sunset Concerts on the Bluff in Fairhope’s Henry George Park on May 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Featured events for the outdoor concert will be a children’s march with flags and the “Checkered Tablecloth Award” for the most interesting picnic setup.

This concert is sponsored in part by a grant from the State Council on the Arts and the cities of Daphne and Fairhope.

As always, the concert is free, although donations will be gladly accepted for the John Allen Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible contribution can do so during a concert or by sending a check to Baldwin Pops Inc., P.O. Box 38, Fairhope, AL 36533.
