Area teams to host holiday hoops tournaments

Several Baldwin County high schools are hosting holiday basketball tournaments this weekend and next week, starting with tournaments at Robertsdale and Baldwin County High School tonight.

The Golden Bear Classic at Robertsdale High School began last night. Robertsdale’s girls will play LeFlore today at 3:30 p.m. and will face McGill-Toolen tomorrow at noon. The Golden Bear boys will play Sidney Lanier at 6:30 tonight and will face McGill-Toolen tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

Baldwin County High School’s Christmas Classic begins tonight, with host BCHS squaring off against Foley at 6 p.m. Tomorrow, BCHS faces Fairhope at 7:30 p.m.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins will host the Coca Cola Christmas Tournament for the second year next week. The tournament begins on Tuesday and games will continue through Wednesday and Thursday. The boys field includes Hoover, Prattville, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Gardendale, Dallas County, Central-Baton Rouge and Gulf Shores. The girls field will include Daphne, Williamson, Slocomb and Gulf Shores.

“We have a fantastic field of participants on both the boys and girls sides of the tournament,” Gulf Shores coach Dru Powell said. “We are not only excited about the quality of basketball that will be on display in the Tank, but also the economic shot in the arm that our community will receive from this event. Several of these teams will be staying multiple nights in hotels/condos as well as dining at our local restaurants and shopping in our stores.

“The players will also have an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a few college coaches that have been calling about the tournament so it is sure to be an exciting time”

Games begin on Tuesday when the Daphne girls face Williamson at noon. The Gulf Shores girls will play Slocomb at 1:30 p.m.

The boys take the floor at 3 p.m. as Daphne faces Prattville, then Gardendale and Spanish Fort meet at 4:30. Dallas County plays Central at 6 p.m., followed by Gulf Shores and Hoover at 7:30.

Boys second round games start at noon on Tuesday and run into the night. The girls consolation and championship games will be played at noon and 4:30 p.m., respectively.

On Thursday, the boys will play at 10:30 a.m., with games continuing until the championship round at 3 p.m.

The Spanish Fort girls will host a tournament starting on Monday with Baker, Baldwin County, Spanish Fort and Navarre, Fla.

The tournament will be a round robin format, and games will be played at 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
