BAY MINETTE, Ala. Baldwin County High School’s quest for third place in this year’s 11th annual Hank Aaron Baseball Classic didn’t go much better than their appearance in last year’s championship game, the Tigers falling 15-0 in four innings to Mary Montgomery of Semmes in the event's consolation game Monday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

A year ago, the Tigers were crushed 14-0 by McGill-Toolen of Mobile in the championship game when Yellow Jackets left-hander Alex Scammel pitched a nine-strikeout, 21-batter one-hitter and McGill-Toolen stroked 18 hits in taking the first-place trophy. Scammel allowed a one-out single to Rob Reid in the third inning and picked him off first moments later.

Mary Montgomery’s Todd Dykes wasn’t quite as dominant in Monday night’s game, but he got the job done. Dykes allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked four and got big offensive points from teammates Ryan Waltman, Blake Dodd and Chris Parsons. Waltman went 3-for-3, all of his hits being doubles, and drove in five runs, Dodd drove in four runs and Parsons belted a three-run home run out of the Class AA Mobile BayBears’ home Stadium. Daniel McGiboney scored three times for the Vikings.

Trace Zarr singled and Lee Bush doubled for Baldwin County’s hits. The loss even the Tigers’ record at 2-2 while the Vikings improved to 4-1. BCHS opened the tournament and its season with a first-round eight-inning, 5-4 win over UMS-Wright of Mobile on Daphne High School’s Trojan Field on Monday of last week, beat Daphne 8-4 the following afternoon, then dropped another eight-inning decision by an 8-7 score to Satsuma in a Wednesday-afternoon contest in Gulf Shores.

The Tigers hosted Spanish Fort’s Toros, who won the Aaron Classic by beating Satsuma 10-3 in Monday night’s championship game, Tuesday night, and will be at home Friday for another 6:30 p.m. game against Foley. On Saturday, BCHS visits Gulf Shores for an 11 a.m. doubleheader

BCHS 5, UMS-Wright 4 in 8

Bush’s double to the right field fence drove in courtesy runner Jacob Dean in the top of the eighth and reliever Daniel Robinson made the run stand up by holding the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning. Robinson pitched 3-2/3 innings, allowed four hits, struck out one and walked one.

Demetrious Coley led the Tigers offense with three hits including two doubles. Josh Huggins stroked a solo home run. Parker Hollingsworth and Evan Grovenstein had two hits each for UMS-Wright. Hollingsworth doubled.

BCHS 8, Daphne 4

Down 3-2 after Daphne scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, BCHS struck back with six runs in the sixth. The Tigers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and the Trojans tacked on their final run in the seventh.

Bush and Dusty Roberts had two hits each and Hiuggins doubled. Daphne used three walks, a Connor Reese single and Hunter Jennings’ sacrifice fly to score its three runs in the fifth and a one-out walk, WilL Stickney’s single and fielders choice grounder to ta0lly in the seventh.

Satsuma 8, BCHS 7 in 8

Putting up lines on the scoreboard that looked more like a defensive battle in the Canadian Football League, Satsuma posted three-run rallies in the first and second to trail 7-6 after BCHS scored all of its runs in the bottom of the first, then the two teams traded zeroes until the Gators tied the game with a run in the seventh and won it with another tally in the eighth.

Huggins’ fielding error let in what proved to be the winning run, somewhat negating his two hits at the plate. Huggins singled and doubled and drove in a run, Bush also singled and doubled, and Zarr belted a bases-loaded triple in the first and added a single in the fifth.

Reid and Brett Langham also tripled for BCHS. Jacob Noble had three hits and two RBI, Jared Brannon two hits, Bradley Hoven a two-run home run, Donavon Wilson and double and a run-scoring ground out, and Tyler Broadus a pair of singles for the Gators, who outhit the Tigers 13-11.
