Auburn ends Daphne's playoff run

DAPHNE — The Trojans made a living this season out of staying close enough to win the big games. But Auburn High's No. 1 ranked Tigers capitalized on DHS turnovers and put the game put of reach by the middle of the third quarter Friday in the third round of the 6A playoffs at Jubilee Stadium.

The Tigers advanced to the semi-finals against Prattville with a 44-10 win at DHS.

"Turnovers hurt us," said DHS coach Glenn Vickery who came up one game shy of winning his 200th career victory. "Give credit to Auburn. Coach Carter had them ready and they took advantage of the turnovers."

Daphne's defense held the Tigers to minus one yard on the first AHS possession. The Trojans then drove 65 yards in seven plays to go up 7-0 on a T. J. Yeldon run of two yards and a Brandon Roberts' PAT at 7:51 in the first period.

But Auburn answered with a 76-yard, all-run, march in 11 plays to tie it on a Gus Brooks run of three yards and Mason Wachter's extra point tied up at 4:12 to go in the first.

DHS then drove from its 22 to the 37 when a tipped Mosley pass intended for Isreal Lamprakes was picked off. It was the first of five costly turnovers for DHS. Auburn retuned the interception to the DHS 34 and struck on a reverse pass to Tony Holland for the TD that put the Tigers up for good. A DHS fumble early in the second quarter led to another Tiger TD and made it 21-7 and another fumble on the second DHS drive of the second quarter led to a 24-yard AHS field goal by Wachter.

An Auburn fumble recovered by Ryan Anderson then led to a Daphne field goal by Roberts from 31 yards out with 5:07 left in the half to make it 24-10. Auburn fumbled again and the ball was recovered by the Trojans who then drove down to the AHS seven. But a third-and-goal TD pass from Mosley to Lamprakes was called back and DHS failed to score before the clock ran out in the first half.

"We felt OK in the first half," Vickery said. "But they made the plays and we didn't . Our kids are torn up. They expected to win this one just like they have the last two weeks even against a really good team like this one. We love our kids and we'll miss our seniors. I'm really proud of the effort they gave all year and especially the last two weeks. They never gave up and we hope to carry that momentum over to next season."

The Trojans finished 6-7 on the year, while Auburn improved to 13-0 with the win.
