The Auburn University Solid Waste Management Research Team will conduct a public meeting on Wednesday, October 10th in Fairhope. The meeting takes place from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Gulf Coast Research & Extension Center auditorium, located at 8300 State Highway 104 in Fairhope. The next public meeting is scheduled for Dothan (AL) on October 16.
In order to ensure an independent and unbiased perspective on the current state of Alabama's soloid waste management procedures, the Auburn team is working with ADEM to facilitate a series of meetings statewide, and compiling public input from the meetings into a final report. Once completed, the final report along with any needed program enhancements will be presented to ADEM and the Alabama state legislature.
In its 2011 regular session, the legislature directed ADEM to evaluate the current solid waste management procedures in Alabama, including the requirements for permitting new solid waste landfills. The legislature also imposed a 24-month moratorium on the issuance of permits to certain new landfills. Earlier this year the legislature passed a one-year extension of this moratorium which runs through May, 2014.
As part of its study efforts Auburn has established a project website, found at www.eng.auburn.edu/asws/
