FOLEY, Ala. — Results of an autopsy done on human remains found Christmas Day in a storage building fire at Foley High School could be a week or two away, according to authorities.
Sgt. Tony Fuqua, an investigator at Foley Police Department, said the skeletal remains were found by firefighters who responded to a fire at 2:38 p.m. Christmas Day at Foley High School. A storage building used to store FHS records had already gone up in flames by the time Foley firefighters arrived at the scene, Fuqua said.
Fire Chief Joey Darby said firefighters’ main concern upon arriving at the site was to ensure that the school weight room and athletic field house, which are closely situated to the storage building, were not affected by the fire. Some minor damage to the weight room resulted from the heat of the storage room fire, Darby said.
According to Darby, firefighters were at the scene of the fire approximately 30 minutes doing what he termed “overhaul” work when firefighters thought they saw human remains in the debris of the storage room.
“They secured the scene with the Police Department and I called the State Fire Marshal’s Office,” Darby said, noting the Fire Marshal’s Office will be the lead investigative agency in the case.
An autopsy was performed on the remains on Saturday.
“At this point, it’s a wait and see game,” Darby said.
Fuqua said anyone who knows of a missing person should contact Foley Police Department at 943-4431. He said no one has been reported missing in the Foley area, and he was unaware of anyone missing in the county.
“The body was so badly burned they couldn’t make out anything,” Fuqua said when asked if the remains were male or female. The remains could even be those of a transient or homeless person, he added.
Foley police will be contacting authorities in neighboring counties and communities such as Escambia County, Fla., in an effort to share information concerning missing persons, Fuqua said.
Darby said the various agencies coming together to work on the case have done so in a spirit of cooperation.
