Baldwin athletes compete in state swim meet

AUBURN, Alabama — Local high school swim teams took part in the Alabama High School Athletic Association state swimming & diving championship Saturday at the James E. Martin Aquatic Complex at Auburn University.

McGill-Toolen Catholic’s Lady Yellow Jackets won the girls state swimming title, the program’s first championship in school history with a 174-162, 12-point gap over Old Shell Road rival Saint Paul’s Episcopal girls team. The Lady Saints took the runner-up trophy with their eight-point margin over third-place Spain Park finishing with 156. The Fairhope High Lady Pirates had the best score for Baldwin girls teams coming in 10th with 99 points in a statewide field of 39 girls clubs.

Of Baldwin County boys teams qualifying for the state meet, Fairhope's boys finished third behind runner-up McGill-Toolen and championship winner Huntsville High. The HHS Panthers posted a 239.5 score to just edge McGill’s defending state-champion Yellow Jackets, finishing total of 237. The Pirates scored 211 points to out-distance fourth-place Bob Jones of Huntsville’s 137. Daphne High School was 15th, Foley 25th, Robertsdale 32nd and Spanish Fort 35 in the 42-team boys’ competition.

Individually, McGill-Toolen senior Will Glass set two AHSAA state meet records on his way to winning the 100-yard butterfly (48.21 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (48.41). Kyle Simpson of Spanish Fort was second to Glass in the 100-Fly (49.22) and third in the 100-Backstroke (50.23). Robertsdale’s Tyler Phelps took sixth and Simon Boles of Fairhope ninth to make All-State in the event.

Fairhope junior Stephen Jellenc turned in a 58.80 in the 100-yard breaststroke to take a close second just 0.31 seconds behind UMS-Wright senior Marlin Brutkiewicz who set a new state meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.51. Jellenc's senior Fairhope teammates Kevin Pollard was fourth in the 100-fly and fellow Pirate Jackson Tharpe also made the All-State tier with a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard back.

Pirate freshman Jackson Tunks took third in the boys 200-yard IM and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle. Phelps was fifth in the 200 IM and Jellenc ninth. Ben Hodde of Fairhope took 10th in the 50 and the 100 freestyle finals.

Individual girls making state-level marks were junior Olivia Hudson of Fairhope who took third in the 100-yard backstroke (58.26) and third in the 200-yard IM (2:09.57).

Foley junior Catherine Taylor took fourth and Lady Pirate senior Sarah Williamson 10th in the 100-yard freestyle. Taylor was also eighth in the 100-yard back.

Robertsdale junior Trista Phelps finished fifth (1:00.13) and Daphne senior Griffin Fisk sixth (1:00.20) in the 100-yard butterfly. Fisk also took 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Daphne sophomore Tara Suhs took 10th in the 200-yard freestyle finals.

In girls relay events, McGill-Toolen (1:51.74) was second behind Auburn (1:50.91) in the girls 200-yard medley relay. Ellis Glass, Sahra El-Hamaki, Margaret Carey and Erica Dekle led the overall champion Lady Jackets. Athens was third. UMS-Wright's Lady Bulldogs were fourth with Hollie Holbrook, Leigh Higby, Paige Madden and Katie Grafton swimming each 50-yard leg. Fairhope was 10th in the 39-team field with Williamson, Ramsey Shane, Hudson and Megan Midkiff.

In the girls 400-yard freestyle relay Daphne's Lady Trojans team of Suhs, Kalei Hannah, Fisk and Mary Katherine Stewart edged Fairhope's Hudson, Midkiff, Shane and Williamson for ninth-place 3:48:05 to 3:49.48. St. Paul's girls won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Cooper Brown, Jessie Everett, Grace Molyneux and Gracie Whiston led the Lady Saints to both victories.

In the boys 200-medley relays, McGill-Toolen also won the gold edging out Fairhope by less than a second 1:35.28 to 1:36.49. Will Anderson, Jackson Algiers, Glass and Russell Noletto led the Jackets. The Pirates crew included Tunks, Jellenc, Pollard and Hodde. Huntsville High was third and Spanish Fort fourth. The Toros line up for the 200 included Ryan Simpson, J.D. Powell, Kyle Simpson and Boyd Turnipseed.

The boys 200-yard freestyle relay was won by Huntsville's Panthers followed by Bob Jones and Hoover. The Toros team of Powell, Ryan Simpson, Turnipseed and Kyle Simpson led SFHS to a fourth-place finish, Fairhope was sixth just behind Spain Park. Jellenc, Riley Boles, Arnold Blohme and Tharpe swam the event for the Pirates.

McGill-Toolen won the boys 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Jared Sutphin, Trey Wintzinger, Carter McDonald and John Smith. Huntsville scraped by the Pirates for second by 0.20 seconds with Tunks, Tharpe, Hodde and Pollard making up the Fairhope side.

Other state-meet records set by Gulf Coast area swimmers in 2012 including two by eighth graders. Paige Madden of UMS-Wright's girls’ posted a new state mark of 1:50.23 in the 200-yard freestyle and also won the 500-yard freestyle and Marie Reed, swimming for the Baker High Lady Hornets won the 100-yard freestyle with a state record time of 51.33 seconds.
