FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Mobile Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi and Superintendent of Schools Gwendolyn P. Byrd will host a public kickoff event at the future site of the Baldwin County Catholic high school on Dick Higbee Road in Fairhope at 2 p.m. on March 30.
Event-goers will have the chance to see site plans for the new school and hear a presentation from Rodi and Byrd. Food and drinks, games for children, music and entertainment will also be provided.
“We have the opportunity to begin a ministry which will truly bless the lives of our young people and their families,” Rodi said in a statement released to media. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a new Catholic high school.”
The archdiocese has previously estimated that the school would cost approximately $25 million. Baldwin County's three Catholic elementary schools (Christ the King in Daphne, St. Benedict in Elberta and St. Patrick in Robertsdale) could feed into the high school.
A recent study by Washington D.C.’s Catholic University of America showed that approximately 250-400 students from Baldwin County would enroll in the high school and that a potential $9.5 million could be raised for the construction of the school. The study also estimated that approximately 8 percent of students from Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic Catholic High School would move to the new Baldwin County school. The pacesetter phase of the fundraising campaign began in November 2014 and the public campaign begins March 30.
The school will be on 40 acres of land purchased by the Archdiocese on Dick Higbee Road near the intersection of Highways 181 and 104.
