Baldwin County approves $37,000 emergency bid to fix Still Road Bridge

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The Baldwin County Commission on Wednesday approved a $37,000 bid to repair overweight-truck damage to Still Road Bridge, asked citizens to report truckers who violate weight limits and considered surveillance cameras at each end of the bridge to catch violators. The emergency bid was awarded to Newell and Bush Inc. to install steel pilings and replace caps. Baldwin County engineer Cal Markert said the bridge was damaged by 18-wheelers which exceeded the weight limit for the bridge. He said a county employee reported the damage, initiating the examination of the structure. The temporary closing creates an 8.3-mile detour for some residents and could affect emergency responders, according to Commissioner Frank Burt. Burt urged citizens to report heavily ladened trucks on weight-restricted bridges. He also suggested installation of surveillance cameras to record unauthorized trucks. The emergency designation bypasses the need for normal bid letting for repairs. The bridge was last inspected six months ago, according to County Engineer Cal Markert. “Logging trucks may weight 80,000 pounds or more,” Markert earlier said. The bridge was not made, and cannot handle, that kind of load.”
