BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The Baldwin County Commission will meet Tuesday in a special session to extend time restrictions for a Safe Routes to School project on Young Street from County Road 44 north for about 2,170 feet.

The Commission also is expected to approve authorization of Commission Chairman Bob James to sign all future documents related to the project.

The 8:15 a.m. meeting will precede a worksession at the Foley Satellite Courthouse.

The Commission action involves changing the date of the original agreement from Dec. 31, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2013.

The Commission previously approved a resolution to utilize federal funding relating to the route in accordance with ALDOT.

About $150,000 is allocated for the sidewalk construction project, according to county records. The county also will submit a grant application to ALDOT for $300,000 to complete the project.

The SRTS agreement between ALDOT and the Commission executed on Feb. 7 was scheduled to expire in December.

ALDOT sent correspondence Dec. 12 granting a time extension through Dec. 31, 2013. This supplemental agreement formalizes the time extension granted in December, according to county records.

The Safe Routes to Schools program encourages kindergarten through eighth grade school children to walk and bicycle to school. The Young Street Sidewalk project will be reimbursed 100 percent by federal aid funding, county records state.
