Baldwin County considering Fort Mims upgrades

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The Baldwin County Commission on Tuesday may approve signage, parking lot striping, fill dirt and other projects at Fort Mims prior to a fund-raiser March 17-18 to commemorate the War of 1812.

The Fort Mims Restoration Association Inc. (FMRA) has received permission from the Alabama Historical Commission to build a blockhouse at the Fort Mims State Historic Site.

The structure will mirror architecture used by pioneers in the early 1800s, according to county documents.

The March event will commemorate the War of 1812 and raise funds for the blockhouse. The FMRA maintains the Fort Mims State Historic site for the Alabama Historical Commission.

The FMRA is requesting the Baldwin County Commission to assist with preparations for the construction of the blockhouse and the fund raising event in March.

The Commission may approve:

- Fill dirt and two loads of topsoil for the blockhouse foundation and to control erosion near the Fort Mims pavilion

- Erection of an 8- by 4-foot sign at State Highway 59 and County Road 80 for directions to the site.

- Marking and painting the parking lot.

- Assistance with electrical system upgrades.

The annual re-enactment of the Fort Mims Massacre will be Aug. 25-26. The Commission may utilize discretionary funds for the project, or existing department funds, according to county records.
