Baldwin County deputies patrolling school zones on first week of classes

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Baldwin County deputies made an appearance Monday at 20 schools in unincorporated areas throughout the county to remind motorists of the start of a new academic year and to issue warnings for traffic violations, according to Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack.

Later this week, warnings will turn to citations for motorists who disobey speed zones at the school.

Mack said deputies also will be enforcing laws relating to school buses picking up children along the roadway.

“There are 16 or 17 schools in unincorporated areas, but we will be at some schools like Magnolia Springs School,” Mack said. “They are incorporated, but we provide security.”

For the past three years, the Sheriff’s Office has provided extra personnel during the first three days of each school year to remind citizens school is back in session, Mack said.

After this week, deputies will make periodic stops at the beginning and end of the class day to enforce traffic laws.

Mack added that new Department of Transportation signage has been placed throughout the county, including Central Baldwin Middle School, to remind motorists that they are in a school zone.
