BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Drug Court Foundation will present “Lost in Woonsocket,” a film about a recovered drug addict, at 9 a.m. Saturday at Premiere Cinemas at the Eastern Shore Mall in Spanish Fort. Admission is free.
Normand Cartier, the focus of the documentary, will be the featured speaker at the Jan. 20 graduation of about 20 Baldwin residents who have completed the program and have had criminal charges dismissed.
The program will be at 6 p.m. at the Church on the Eastern Shore, 10274 State Highway 104, Fairhope.
Tickets for the graduation are $10 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Baldwin County Drug Court Foundation and its support of the administration of the drug court program.
The Baldwin County Drug Court was founded in Baldwin County in October 2007. Statistics show that as many as 66 percent of the crimes committed in Baldwin County have some relationship to drugs or alcohol.
The drug court program promotes justice and uniformity of judicial proceedings and decisions within Baldwin County and provides cohesive educational and rehabilitative efforts to meet the needs of those with drug and alcohol addiction to reduce future criminal conduct and return people to normal, productive lives.
It takes a minimum of two years to complete the program. About 240 defendants have pleaded into the program. Forty-six were adjudicated for non-compliance and sentenced to prison, 50 people have successfully completed the program and have not been charged with any other crimes in the Alabama State Judicial System, and 122 are pending. If successfully completed, the criminal charges are dismissed.
The Baldwin County Drug Court Foundation Inc. is a non-profit venture by Judge Robert Wilters, Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack, Baldwin County District Attorney Judy Newcomb, Chief Drug Court Contract Counsel, Baldwin County Bar Association, Baldwin County Mental Health, Baldwin County Court Services Inc., and The Shoulder to supplement the educational and rehabilitative efforts and goals of the Baldwin County Drug Court by providing resources for and promoting activities of the Baldwin County Drug Court.
Drug court is at 9 a.m. each Friday at the Baldwin County Courthouse in Bay Minette.
