MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Baldwin County's dream season ended like a nightmare on Friday as the Tigers lost 10-2 to Huntsville in the deciding game of the 6A baseball championship in Montgomery.
BCHS fell 6-1 to the Panthers in the series opener on Thursday. The Tigers managed just eight hits and three runs in the championship series.
"Honestly, I felt like our pitchers threw a lot of pitches in the first four rounds and we had a lot of really tough, contested games," Baldwin County head coach Peter Bezeredi said. "We asked a lot out of them. They threw a lot of pitches. It felt like both of them (starting pitchers Jansen Boeschen and J.A. Harville) were low on velocity and just kind of ran out of gas. Don't take anything away from Huntsville, though, they just knocked the pee out of the ball."
The Panther pitchers, Luke Leeth in Game One and Daniel Koger in Game Two, held the Tigers scoreless for 12 of the 14 innings played in the series.
"Both of them threw two or three different pitches for strikes," BCHS junior utility player Jordan Ebert said. "Koger was getting his curveball over all day today for a strike. Both of them were probably touching high 80s, maybe low 90s. They stepped up and it was tough to hit off them."
In Game Two on Friday the Panthers scored three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run from Andrew Dennis. Huntsville chased TIger starter J.A. Harville after just 1 1/3 inning. Harville (9-2) gave up five runs on five hits to take the loss. The Panthers built a 9-0 lead before Kristian Johnson drove in both BCHS runs on a double in the top of the fifth.
In Game One on Thursday Jansen Boeschen (8-2) gave up six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Billy Johnstone had Baldwin County's lone RBI on Thursday.
